Does your laptop seem noisier than it used to be? Or is it even running hotter? A clogged cooling system is probably to blame. You can handle a basic hardware clean yourself.
Compared with a desktop PC, a laptop is a very tightly enclosed device. We don't recommend that ordinary users take it apart. But there is a way to give your laptop a basic clean yourself, without having to take it apart.
Use a can of compressed air
There's a wide range of compressed air cans available and you won't pay more than a hundred crowns for one. They come with a thin plastic straw that lets you direct the air exactly where it's needed without dismantling your laptop. The right spot is usually the two vents through which air flows into and out of the laptop. You should find one on the underside, and you may even be able to see the fan through it. The other will be somewhere on the side of the laptop.
- Point the nozzle of the compressed air can into both cooling vents and blow out the trapped dust and dirt
- You can also use compressed air to blow trapped dirt out of the keyboard.
- You can tell whether your cleaning made a difference by how much dust flew out of the laptop while you were blowing the compressed air
What to do if cleaning didn't help
If you've carefully blown out your laptop's cooling system following our instructions and the laptop is still noisy or even overheating, the cause is more serious. There are three possibilities:
- You didn't manage to reach the spot where the cooling system is clogged, so nothing changed
- The fan in your laptop is failing – its bearing is starting to seize, which makes the fan noisy and less effective at cooling
- If your laptop has already seen many years of service, the thermal paste may also have degraded. It's applied to the graphics chip and processor, with a copper heat pipe placed on top. This paste quickly transfers heat from the motherboard components to the copper heat pipe, which in turn is cooled by the fan drawing in cold air and expelling warm air. After some years, however, thermal paste hardens and loses its properties. It then has to be carefully removed and replaced with a fresh layer. Unfortunately, in all three cases a qualified technician needs to step in. And that's where we come in.
We'll fix your laptop's noise and overheating for you
We'll take your laptop completely apart and find out what's causing the extra noise and overheating. Whether there's literally a carpet of dust somewhere deep inside the cooling system, old hardened thermal paste or a fan on the verge of giving up – we'll sort the problem out with ease and return your laptop in top condition.
